He served in the Polish Armed Forces as a lieutenant in the infantry and was an officer of the Home Army's intelligence. Messing participated in significant historical events including the Norwegian campaign and the Warsaw Uprising. He was also a trained paratrooper, evidenced by his parachute badges.
