Koski-Vähälä was coached by Esa Utriainen from 2001 to 2004 and by Kimmo Kinnunen thereafter. He was part of Ullavan Kilva until 2007, and since 2008 he has represented Ylivieskan Kuula. He achieved notable success by winning the Pihtipudas Javelin Carnival in 2011 with a throw of 81.53 meters.
