He served in the SM-liiga from 1975 to 1988, representing Finland in international matches. Notably, he refereed six games in the 1986 World Championships and five in 1987, including the decisive match between the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia. After his refereeing career, Jalarvo held various responsibilities in officiating within the SM-liiga, the Finnish Ice Hockey Federation, and the International Ice Hockey Federation.
