His cartoons featured distinctive illustrations accompanied by four separate lines of text containing related jokes. A small white dog named Heidi often appeared in his drawings. According to Juhani Tolvanen, Koivunen's nearly 52-year tenure at Ilta-Sanomat makes him one of only two cartoonists in the world to have consistently drawn for the same publication for such a long duration.
