Jaroslav Bašta was a Czech politician and diplomat, originally an archaeologist, who became a dissident and political prisoner during normalization. He was a signatory of Charter 77 and a candidate for the presidency in 2023. After the Velvet Revolution, he held positions in secret services and the lustration commission. He served as a Member of Parliament for the Czech Social Democratic Party from 1996 to 2000, and again for SPD in 2021. He was a minister without portfolio from 1998 to 2000 and served as Czech ambassador to Russia and Ukraine between 2000 and 2010.
