Jay U. Gunter, born on January 15, 1911, was an American pathologist and amateur astronomer from Sanford, North Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Jefferson Medical College, earning his medical degree in 1938. He served in the Medical Corps during WWII and later worked at Watts Hospital. After retiring in 1976, he focused on amateur astronomy, particularly asteroids. Gunter published 'Tonight's Asteroids' and had an asteroid named after him, receiving multiple awards for his contributions to astronomy.
