Jayakanthan (born April 24, 1934 - April 8, 2015), popularly known as J.K., was an influential Indian writer, journalist, orator, filmmaker, critic, and social activist. He joined the Indian Communist Party at the age of 9 and began his literary career with his first publication in a party booklet. Over his six-decade career, he authored two autobiographies, forty novels, and over two hundred stories, and produced two films based on his novels. He was awarded the Jnanpith Award in 2002 and the Padma Bhushan in 2009.
