He has studied evolutionary mechanisms, particularly the relationships between developmental biology and paleontology, within the framework of the synthetic theory of evolution. Additionally, Chaline has analyzed the connections between evolutionary sciences and religions. He is an emeritus research director at CNRS and an honorary study director at the École Pratique des Hautes Études.
