Gall studied natural sciences at the University of Strasbourg and earned his doctorate in 1971. He became a professor of geology and paleontology at the same university in 1978, focusing on paleoecology and taphonomy. He has received multiple awards for his contributions to paleontological research and served as president of the European Palaeontological Association.
