Weissenbach's work in molecular genetics and chromosome mapping laid the groundwork for positional cloning of genes associated with various diseases. In 2001, he received the Prince of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research, alongside notable scientists including Craig Venter and Francis Collins.
