Jeanne Hopkins Lucas was an influential American politician and educator, recognized as the first African-American woman elected to North Carolina's state Senate. Lucas dedicated much of her career to education, serving as a teacher and holding administrative roles. After her appointment to the Senate in 1993, she was re-elected six times and held several leadership positions until her passing in 2007 due to breast cancer.
