His father, Andrew Bews, is a former player for Geelong. Jed, who stands 186 cm tall and weighs 88 kg, primarily plays as a defender. He made his AFL debut in round 9 of the 2014 season against Fremantle and originally competed as a pole vaulter, becoming a junior national champion.
