H.J.R. (Jef) van Laar was a Dutch politician born on February 16, 1921, in Stokhem and died on August 15, 2004, in Margraten. He began his civil service career in 1939, later becoming the municipal secretary of Eijsden. He served as mayor of Cadier en Keer and Gronsveld and was an active participant in the Dutch resistance during World War II, helping numerous individuals escape the Nazis. He played a significant role in establishing the American Cemetery in Margraten.
