He specialized in severe storms and served as provost at the University of Oklahoma, where he had a prominent academic career since joining in 1973. Kimpel directed the National Severe Storms Laboratory from 1997 to 2010, contributing significantly to weather radar advancements and coalition building for the National Weather Center. He earned a Ph.D. in meteorology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and served in the Vietnam War, receiving a Bronze Star Medal for his service.
