His debut novel, 'Kys til højre og venstre', published in 1939, won the H.C. Andersen Medal. He worked as a journalist for Politiken and later became a war correspondent in London. Gielstrup served in the Royal Air Force but was tragically killed in combat as a Spitfire pilot. His literary works were rediscovered in the 1960s, and his debut novel was adapted into a film in 1969.
