He developed the iconic Lego minifigure, which first appeared in 1978 and features movable arms and legs, along with a neutral facial expression. The minifigure lacks a clearly defined gender or human race, aiming to bring life to Lego structures. Colleagues praised Knudsen for his remarkable creativity and numerous ideas. He passed away due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in Hvide Sande, Denmark.
