Jeremiah Sikireta Chirau was a prominent chief in Rhodesia, influential during the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI). Born on June 6, 1923, he served in World War II and became well-versed in African customary law. Chirau was appointed acting chief in 1961 and later chief of the Chirau people's communal lands. He joined the Council of Chiefs in 1970, serving as its president from 1973 until his death on January 27, 1985. In 1976, he founded the Zimbabwe United People's Organisation (ZUPO), although it failed to secure electoral success and was disbanded.
