Jim Jones was the founder and leader of the Peoples Temple, notorious for the mass suicide on November 18, 1978, which led to the deaths of over 900 members in Jonestown, Guyana, including more than 200 children who died from cyanide poisoning. Jones was born in Indiana and established his temple there in the 1950s before moving to California. The Jonestown incident was one of the largest mass suicides in history and represented the greatest loss of American civilian life in a non-natural disaster until the September 11 attacks.
