James Robert Payne, born on April 17, 1970, in Louth, Lincolnshire, is an English professional golfer known for his amateur successes, including winning the 1991 European Amateur and the British Youths Open Amateur Championship. He gained recognition by finishing as the leading amateur at the 1991 Open Championship, playing alongside Jack Nicklaus. Payne turned professional after the Walker Cup in 1991, was named Rookie of the Year in 1992, and secured two European Tour victories before concluding his Tour career in 2000. He became the club professional at Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club in 2003.
