Jimmie Lee Jackson (1938-1965) was an African American civil rights activist from Marion, Alabama, and a Baptist deacon. On February 18, 1965, he was participating in a peaceful voting rights march when he was attacked and fatally shot by an Alabama state trooper. His death, which occurred eight days later in a hospital, played a crucial role in mobilizing the Selma to Montgomery marches and the subsequent passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, addressing racial disenfranchisement in the South.
