He faced notable challenges, including a crash landing in 1933, after which he was rescued by Eskimos and a famous Russian aviator. Later, he became a test pilot for Lockheed and contributed to aircraft training safety. Following a serious injury, he transitioned to real estate and travel agency work. Mattern supported the space program and his pilot's license famously went to the moon aboard Apollo 11.
