James Hardy Marks was an officer in the Royal Air Force, born on March 19, 1918. He was a prominent aviator and the commanding officer of 35 Squadron, a founding squadron of the Pathfinder Force. Marks was an innovator in target marking methods. He died on September 20, 1942, after his Halifax was attacked by a German night fighter during a raid on Saarbrücken, but heroically stayed at the controls to enable his crew's escape before crashing near Blesme, France.
