Jimmy McGriff was an American jazz organist born James Harrell McGriff on April 3, 1936, in Philadelphia. He began playing drums at age eight and later took up several other instruments. Initially a bassist, he transitioned to playing the organ as its popularity rose. Throughout his career, he collaborated with numerous musicians, including Richard 'Groove' Holmes, Stanley Turrentine, David 'Fathead' Newman, Blue Mitchell, and Lonnie Smith. McGriff passed away on May 24, 2008, in Philadelphia due to complications from multiple sclerosis.
