He moved to New York in 1963, balancing a day job while performing with notable musicians like Charles Mingus. Vass gained prominence in the 1970s, collaborating with soul and funk projects, and later leading his band. After converting to Islam, he adopted the name Nur Abdullah. He passed away on September 20, 2006.
