Jiří Formánek is a Czech soldier born on February 13, 1924, who attained the rank of colonel. He actively fought against Czechoslovak communist totalitarianism and emigrated to West Germany after 1948. There, he engaged in intelligence activities against the communist regime in Czechoslovakia. After returning illegally, he established an intelligence network in Czechoslovakia. Formánek was arrested in 1950 and sentenced to 21 years. He faced persecution until the Velvet Revolution in 1989. On September 28, 2007, he was awarded the Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk Order II class for his contributions to democracy and human rights.
