He began his professional writing career in 1976 with his debut work, 'Geisterbahn', which won the prestigious All Yomimono New Mystery Writers Prize. Akagawa is exceptionally prolific, having authored over 480 short stories and sold more than 300 million copies. His works have inspired adaptations in anime, video games, and television, with one of his most famous series featuring the cat detective Mikeneko Hōmuzu.
