Her pseudonym is derived from an abbreviation of her first name and the character Maria Vargas, portrayed by Ava Gardner. She is the daughter of cultural journalist Philippe Audoin and has a twin sister, Frédérique Audoin-Rouzeau, who writes under the name Fred Vargas, and a brother, historian Stéphane Audoin-Rouzeau. Jo Vargas studied at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs.
