Throughout his life, he contributed significantly to the fields of history and art criticism. He married Maria Assumpta Escudero i Ribot in 1962, and they had four children together. Joan Ainaud passed away in Barcelona on November 5, 1995, and is buried in the cemetery of the port of Llançà in Alt Empordà.
