Joan Gich i Girbau was a Catalan politician, craftsman, and businessman born on March 17, 1909, in Palafrugell, where he also died on July 31, 1974. He was a councilman from 1934 to 1936 after running for the Lliga Regionalista in the municipal elections of 1933. Gich served as mayor from 1960 to 1973 during the time tourism became Palafrugell's main economic activity. In 1970, he was appointed by the state to join the Ministry of Governance. He was also responsible for creating a wrought-iron cross in Sant Sebastià, which has since disappeared.
