She has held prominent academic leadership roles, serving as interim Chancellor of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and later as the president of the University of New Hampshire from 1996 to 2002. Leitzel earned her degrees from Hanover College, Brown University, and Indiana University, where she obtained her PhD in algebra. Notably, she received the Charles Holmes Pettee Medal in 2002 and was the commencement speaker at Hanover College, receiving an honorary doctorate in 2024.
