Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret was an influential American photographer, book publisher, and civil rights activist known for her groundbreaking work. She made history as the first woman to photograph herself giving birth in 1951. Over her career, she contributed over 500,000 negatives to the State Historical Society of Iowa, earning recognition as Iowa's leading documentary photographer of the 20th century. In 1996, she was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame and founded Penfield Books in 1979, which has published over 110 titles. She wrote an award-winning autobiography recognized for its themes of visual truth and social justice.
