Joan Xavier Comella Carnicé is a Spanish doctor and cellular biology professor born in 1963 in Vilanova de Segrià, Lleida. He holds a degree and doctorate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona. Comella is currently the director of the Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute at the Hospital of Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona. Previously, he served as the director of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) from 2009 to 2022. He has held academic positions at the University of Lleida and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
