João da Mata de Ataíde is a former Brazilian runner born on February 8, 1954, in Diamantina. He began competing in 1973 and participated until 1997. Initially running for Clube Vila Rica, he later joined Clube Atlético Mineiro after the former's athletics team was dissolved. João won the prestigious São Silvestre race in 1983. He faced challenges, including missing the 1984 Olympics due to injury and controversy. He achieved success again in 1995, winning the veteran category of Corrida Internacional de São Silvestre. His athletic career concluded in 1997.
