João Mesquita was a Portuguese journalist born in Coimbra on June 3, 1957. He began his journalism career in the late 1970s with the weekly Voz do Povo. He worked for several newspapers, including Jornal de Notícias and Público, which he co-founded. He served as president of the Journalists' Union from 1989 to 1993 and collaborated on various projects, including a book on the Académica football club. He passed away in Lisbon on March 12, 2009, due to a pulmonary disease.
