Joaquín Madolell Estévez was a Spanish military officer born on April 23, 1923, in Melilla. He was the first Spanish spy to infiltrate the Soviet military intelligence services. Notably, he played a key role in Operation Mari (1964-1967), a collaboration among Spain, Italy, and the United States that dismantled a major Russian military intelligence network in Southern Europe during the Cold War. His dangerous mission included advanced training in intelligence techniques while in Moscow, putting his life at risk. He passed away in Madrid on October 1, 2011.
