Jocelyn Bell Burnell is a British astrophysicist who discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967 while she was a postgraduate student. She shares recognition of this discovery with her supervisor, Anthony Hewish. Currently, she serves as the president of the Institute of Physics, a charitable organization aimed at promoting the practice, understanding, and application of science. The announcement of the pulsar discovery had five authors, with Hewish listed first followed by Bell, but she did not receive direct recognition when the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Hewish in 1974.
