As a race official, he attempted to disqualify Kathrine Switzer, a female runner officially entered into the race, reflecting the era's gender biases in sports. Despite his initial resistance, Semple later supported changes to marathon rules, overseeing the implementation of qualifying times in 1970 and facilitating a separate women's race in 1972, following changes by the Amateur Athletic Union.
