Joseph Mercer, OBE, was an English thoroughbred racehorse jockey, known for his incredible achievements in flat racing from 1947 to 1985, winning 2,810 races in Britain. Nicknamed 'Smokin' Joe', he won his first British Classic in 1953 and became Champion Apprentice in 1952 and 1953. Mercer achieved significant success with mount Brigadier Gerard and secured every British Classic except the Derby. He later transitioned to a role as racing manager after retiring from riding in 1985 and continued in the industry until 2006.
