Johannes 'Joe' Modise (1929–2001) was a notable South African politician and one of the founding members of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the military wing of the ANC. He served as South Africa's first Black Minister of Defence from 1994 to 1999, marking a significant period in the country's political transition. Modise's contributions to the ANC and his role in the liberation struggle made him a prominent figure in South Africa's fight against apartheid.
