Johannes van Staveren was a Dutch naval officer born on February 13, 1910, in The Hague. He became the commander of Hr. Ms. TM 51 during the outbreak of World War II. On May 10, 1940, he engaged in military actions near Rotterdam, where his ship suffered damage and casualties among the crew. After depleting their ammunition, they returned for repairs. Initially slated for destruction, an attempt was made to flee to the United Kingdom, where they learned of the Netherlands' capitulation but continued the mission.
