John Aitkenhead (1910-1998) was a Scottish educator and co-founder of Kilquhanity School with his wife Morag. He received degrees in English and Education from the University of Glasgow. Aitkenhead taught in various secondary schools across Scotland and, after observing at Summerhill School, decided to establish his own free school, which opened in 1940. Kilquhanity School operated as a boarding and day institution until its closure in 1995, during which Aitkenhead was recognized as a conscientious objector.
