John Burnette MacChesney II is an American chemist and a pioneer in fiber optics, born on July 8, 1929, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Bowdoin College in 1951, served in the Korean War, and later earned his Ph.D. in geochemistry from Penn State. At Bell Laboratories, he initially researched ceramics and crystals before shifting focus to optical fibers, co-developing Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition with P.B. O’Connor. MacChesney holds over 100 patents and received numerous awards, including the Charles Stark Draper Prize. He has served as an adjunct professor at various institutions.
