John Backus was an American computer scientist renowned for his work on the Fortran programming language and the Backus-Naur Form. He was awarded the Turing Award in 1977 for his contributions to programming language theory. Born in 1924 in Philadelphia, he initially studied chemistry but later shifted his focus to mathematics and computing. Backus led the development of Fortran for the IBM 704 and contributed to the international ALGOL standards. He received the National Medal of Science in 1975 and had an asteroid named in his honor in 2007. He passed away in 2007.
