John Graham Backus (1911-1988) was a Lithuanian American physicist and acoustician. Born in Portland, Oregon, he earned a BA from Reed College and pursued graduate studies at UC Berkeley, specializing in nuclear physics. He taught at USC from 1945 until 1980 and focused on gaseous discharges and later, musical acoustics. Backus authored 'The Acoustical Foundations of Music,’ a key text in the field. Also an accomplished musician, he held a MMus in conducting. A skilled mountaineer, he was notable for his achievements in climbing all the peaks on the Sierra Club's Hundred Peaks Section List.
