John Birch was an American missionary and a captain in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. He served as a military intelligence officer in China, where he was killed in action shortly after the end of the war, during a confrontation with Chinese communist soldiers. Birch was born on May 8, 1918, in Landour, India, and died on August 25, 1945, in Xi'an, China. Posthumously, he was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal for his contributions and service.
