John Brereton Barlow (October 24, 1924 – December 10, 2008) was a renowned cardiologist in South Africa. He qualified as a doctor in 1951 after gaining experience as a consultant assistant at Hammersmith Hospital and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. In the late 1950s, he returned to South Africa to work as a professor in cardiology at the research unit of Johannesburg Hospital, where he conducted significant studies on heart disorders and discovered the cause of mitral valve prolapse, leading to the eponymous 'Barlow's syndrome.'
