John Boscawen Burland, born on March 4, 1936, in Buckinghamshire, is a prominent British geotechnical engineer. After emigrating to South Africa post-World War II, he studied civil engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. He worked at Ove Arup and Partners before earning a PhD at Cambridge in 1968. Burland led the geotechnical department at BRE and became a professor at Imperial College in 1980. He is known for his work on the Leaning Tower of Pisa and significant London constructions, including the Westminster Palace and the Jubilee Line.
