John Canemaker, born in 1943, is an independent animator, animation historian, author, professor, and academic from the United States. He began teaching and developing the animation program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1980. Since 1988, he has directed the program and is currently a full professor. He served as interim chair of the Graduate Film and Television Department from 2001 to 2002. His animated film, The Moon and the Son: An Imagined Conversation, won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2006 and an Emmy Award for design in 2007.
