John Alton Collins was an American-Canadian cartoonist, born on October 7, 1917, in Washington D.C. He relocated to Canada at age three and studied art at local institutions. Collins became the first staff cartoonist for the Montreal Gazette in 1939, known for his character Uno Who, a humorous representation of a taxpayer. Respected for his speed and reliability, he remained with the Gazette until his retirement in 1982. Collins passed away on September 16, 2007, at the age of 89.
