John Daido Loori was a prominent Zen Buddhist rōshi and the abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery. He founded the Mountains and Rivers Order and served as CEO of Dharma Communications. Loori received multiple dharma transmissions and a Dendo Kyoshi certificate from the Soto school. An accomplished photographer and author of over twenty books, he had a deep interest in naturalism. In 2009, he stepped down due to health issues and passed away from lung cancer shortly after.
